Can the Chiefs “Shake it Off” and Win the AFC Conference Championship Game?

Following their 27-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, January 21, the Chiefs have advanced to tonight’s AFC Conference Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens. Kansas City Chiefs’ star player and tight end Travis Kelce has received significant press this 2023-24 NFL season following his new relationship with Eras Tours singer Taylor Swift.

The couple broke the internet and took the NFL world by storm on September 24, 2023, when Swift attended her first Chiefs game. NFL rankings skyrocketed amidst Swift’s attendance at the Kansas City Chiefs vs Chicago Bears game. 

Following the legendary singer’s appearance on the September 24 game, FOX’s national broadcast experienced 24.3 million total viewers and an increase in female viewership by 63%. Not only did this new relationship increase NFL rankings, but it also aided the Chiefs’ tight end himself. Since being linked to the acclaimed singer, the Kelce brothers’ podcast, New Heights, was ranked #1 on Apple, Travis saw a 400% increase in jersey sales, and the tight end gained well over 2 million Instagram followers. 

Throughout the 2023-24 NFL season, Taylor Swift has attended 11 of the Kansas City franchise’s games and has been widely regarded as the team’s good luck charm. 

Travis Kelce’s statistics amidst Swift’s attendance throughout the 2023-24 NFL season are as follows:

  • September 24, 2023: Chiefs vs Chicago Bears (41-10)- Kelce had 7 catches for 69 yards and 1 touchdown
  • October 1, 2023: Chiefs vs New York Jets (23-20)- Kelce had 6 catches for 60 yards
  • October 12, 2023: Chiefs vs Denver Broncos (19-8)- Kelce had 9 catches for 124 yards
  • October 22, 2023: Chiefs vs Los Angeles Chargers (31-17)- Kelce had 12 catches for 179 yards and 1 touchdown 
  • December 3, 2023: Chiefs vs Green Bay Packers (19-27)- Kelce had 4 catches for 81 yards
  • December 10, 2023: Chiefs vs Buffalo Bills (17-20)- Kelce had 6 catches for 83 yards 
  • December 17, 2023: Chiefs vs Patriots (27-17)- Kelce had 5 catches for 28 yards 
  • December 25, 2023: Chiefs vs Raiders (14-20)- Kelce had 5 catches for 44 yards
  • December 31, 2023: Chiefs vs Bengals (25-17)- Kelce had 3 catches for 16 yards
  • January 13, 2024: Chiefs vs Dolphins (26-7)- Kelce had 7 catches for 71 yards
  • January 21, 2024: Chiefs vs Bills (27-24)- Kelce had 5 catches for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns

Amidst the Eras Tour singer’s presence, the Chiefs have gone 8-3 while they went 4-2 in her absence. Throughout the 11 games the acclaimed singer attended, her boyfriend averaged 6.3 catches per game for 75.5 yards. In the 6 games that Swift was not in attendance, Kelce averaged 6 catches per game and 50 yards. 

When looking at the statistics of the games this past season, it does not seem like Kelce performed significantly better in the presence of his girlfriend; however, he managed to score his season-high of two touchdowns in the Chiefs’ Divisional Round playoff win against the Buffalo Bills when all of his loved ones were in attendance. 

Swift served as the Chiefs’ good luck charm as the Kansas City franchise was favored to lose the Divisional Round Game against the Bills last Sunday. The Bills were favored to win the game by 2.5 points, and the Buffalo franchise was -145 on the money line while the Chiefs were +120. 

As the Chiefs enter the AFC Conference Championship Game tonight, the Ravens are favored to win the conference title by 4 points. When looking at the money line, the Ravens are favored at -207, while the Chiefs are +171. Can Taylor Swift work her magic tonight in the AFC Conference Championship Game just as she did in the Divisional Round Game?
