The biggest event of the summer, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, is a month away and this is the right time to get to know what to expect from the prestigious competition.
This will be the first time the tournament will be held in Oceania, as the current edition was scheduled for Australia and New Zealand and it will also be the first time that the tournament will be co-hosted.
Aside from the two hosts, 30 other teams will participate in the tournament, including no less than 8 debutants, that’s 25%! Among those, you’ll find Asian representatives from Vietnam and The Philippines, Morocco and Zambia from Africa, Haiti, and Panama from the North and Central America region, and two debuting Europeans as well, the Republic of Ireland and Portugal.
The games will take place in 10 different venues across 9 cities, 5 in Australia and 4 in New Zealand. The host cities are Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney (with 2 different venues) in Australia and Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Dunedin in New Zealand.
The opening game and the Final will both be held at the same venue, the Stadium Australia (commonly known as Accor Stadium) in Sydney, an 80000+ capacity establishment.
The tournament’s official mascot is Tazuni, a little penguin that can be found in New Zealand, and the official tournament ball is called OCEAUNZ which will also have the same technology as Qatar 2022’s “Al Rihla” ball.
A total of 62 matches (48 in the group stage and 16 in the knockouts) will take place during the tournament and now what’s left is to patiently wait a month till this summer showdown kicks off with the opening game between Australia and the Republic of Ireland.
